About Us

St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT), established in 1998, is the successor of the Nyegezi Social Training Institute (NSTI) founded in 1960 as the Nyegezi Social Training Centre by the Catholic White Fathers (now called the Missionaries of Africa), under the initiative of Bishop Joseph Blomjous of the Mwanza Diocese, the Centre became NSTI in 1983.

The University extends over 600 acres in the Nyegezi-Malimbe area 10km south of Mwanza city, lying 3-4km off the main Mwanza-Shinyanga road on the shores of Lake Victoria. The University is a half-hour’s drive from Mwanza by car or bus. As part of Tanzania’s central highlands (1140m above sea level), the area to the south of Lake Victoria is noted for its moderate temperatures. Mwanza can be reached from other parts of Tanzania and East Africa by train, air, ferry and highway.

Our Vision :

When the Catholic Bishops of Tanzania decided to extend the Church’s services to the provision of higher education they envisioned a training that would not only impart academic and professional skills but also that would inculcate values of civic and social learning and ethics, such as acquisition of national identity, cultural norms, political growth and responsible citizenship. Thus the Church’s vision is to develop a whole person.

Our Mission :

St. Augustine University of Tanzania strives at:

i. being a centre of excellence by providing a high quality of education, research and public service;

ii. imparting not only academic knowledge and professional skills but also promoting life – long study habits and striving to instil values of integrity, self – respect and respect for others;

iii. promoting the pursuit and defence of truth with transparency and honestly, and service with competence and dedication;

iv. developing a sense of caring for personal and community property;

v. a holistic development of the person by providing sound knowledge, higher analytical ability and commitment to generous service to humankind.

Conscious of man’s orientation toward God and neighbour and fostering an ethical and service-oriented approach in its academic and professional training, St. Augustine University of Tanzania fulfils its goal by preparing persons well equipped to contribute to the ideals of social, economic and political development
