Innovation with an eye towards tradition continues to guide the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communications. The introduction of the Master of Arts in 2005 and the Doctor of Philosophy in Mass Communications programme in 2009, is a distinct example of the faculty's continued commitment to innovation. SAUT's taught PhD is the only such programme in Tanzania and without doubt the best resourced in Eastern Africa. The programme provides excellent research and professional education to equip students with the knowledge needed to process symbols for creating, analyzing, and disseminating messages. It’s siting in the garden campus on the shores of fresh water Lake Victoria makes it an ideal environment for serious research and intellectual discourse.
Thus the faculty remains multidisciplinary with a commitment to being a professional and a ranking research centre preparing students for leadership in the rapidly-changing and technology-driven society. For instance, there exists an adequate intellectual facilitating infrastructure consisting of two fully functional 24-hour top-of-the-range radio stations (one on-air), a well-equipped TV studio and a well-stocked library.
